A Substitute Teacher Gets a Spanish Lesson from a Kindergartener

by Stephanie Abraham

So, what words should I know?

Saul shouts, ¡TIGRE! ¡ELEFANTE!

somewhat shocking to this maestro.

Mmm, this’ll be an interesting day.

What about lápiz or el baño?

Saul shakes his head, león.

My mind swirls, Oh no!

I wonder if he’ll go on.

While I consider asking for more,

Saul, reading my mind, says,

¡LUCHADOR!

Knowing, I should of asked Señora Reyes.

Next time, I’ll better prepare for the day

and figure out how to say SIENTATE!
