One Good Friend

by Kalina Smith

When he walked into my classroom on the first day,

I assumed he was just another twerp.

A redheaded delinquent who’d just cause me more trouble

Than a nest of wasps tangled on the outside of the building.

Then an assignment showed me the truth.

I don’t remember what it asked or what we’d read.

Yet, I don’t think it matters

This, being Arkansas,

I saw a lot of church and Jesus and God,

Or some amalgamation of the three.

Not from my fiery vermillion butterfly.

His answer was simple,

One line, like e.e. cummings,

Or maybe Hemingway.

It made me freeze,

As if I’d been stung by a honeybee.

“Most people would say religion, but all you really need is one good friend.”

Tears poured out of me,

Like hot honey from a bear-shaped bottle,

Stuck on my face and fingers.

Such an important lesson

That little freshman taught me.

When freed from his cocoon, he soared.

He brought everyone with him,

Not one caterpillar left behind.
